Large fleshy polyps on short corallites, four to five inches across when open, usually red-and-green or purple. Encrusting rather than branching.
Wants lower light and lower flow than most people give it. Placed high it retracts and slowly starves. Polyp size is what separates it from B. merletti, which is regularly sold as wellsi: merletti runs one to two inches on elongated branching stalks that give the colony a pipe-like skeleton. Measure the open polyp rather than reading the label.
