Names that contain “Blastomussa” and are not this coral: Blue Raven. They are separate corals traded at their own prices, so read the animal rather than the label.

Large fleshy polyps, usually red-and-green or purple, each rising from its own cup 9 to 14 mm across. Open, a polyp spreads to roughly one to two inches. The heads grow as separate tubes joined at the base.

Before you buy one

Wants lower light and lower flow than most people give it. Placed high it retracts and slowly starves. B. merleti also grows in separate tubes and is regularly sold as wellsi, and size is what separates the two. Measure the open polyp rather than reading the label: on a merleti it stays under about an inch, and on a wellsi it reaches roughly one to two inches. A merleti's cups are smaller too, under 7 mm, on longer, pipe-like stalks. A flat, encrusting colony with big polyps sold as wellsi may be a third species, B. vivida, which has been misidentified as wellsi.
