Long flowing tubular tentacles with contrasting tips, rising from a large fleshy STRIPED oral disc on a single conical skeleton. Colour varies widely: green or brown discs with blue, purple, orange, cream or pink-tipped tentacles are all normal.
How to tell it is the real thing
Indonesian specimens carried a well-documented wasting problem for years; Australian ones fared better. Origin is a real question to ask here. The condition has a name, Elegance Coral Syndrome, its cause and cure are still unknown, and it spreads between Catalaphyllia, so quarantine rather than adding one straight to a display. What to look for before buying: a swollen oral disc, polyps that will not expand, a white opaque mucus coating, and tentacles that no longer grip food.
