A leather coral built as a single thick stalk topped by a broad cap, the capitulum, with the polyps emerging from the cap and giving it a fuzzy outline when they are out. The mushroom shape is a young one's: as it matures the cap goes wavy and convoluted and stops looking much like a toadstool.
Sheds a waxy film periodically and looks like it is dying while it does. That is normal, and it is how the coral sloughs algae and detritus. It can run from a few days to over a week. DO NOT PEEL THE FILM OFF, which damages the tissue underneath; raising flow helps it lift on its own.
Forgiving of most placements, and it moves water on its own. Toadstool Leather is beginner to keep at a typical PAR of 50–150 in moderate flow.
