A free-living brain coral that sits on sand or mud rather than attaching to rock, growing in a folded or figure-eight outline with walled valleys and often more than one mouth. Rarely much over 20cm. The genus name means rough leaf, which is close to what it looks like lying on a sandbed.
Belongs on the sandbed, not wedged into rockwork: mounted on rock it abrades and recedes. Wild-collected specimens are common, so check for tissue recession at the edges.
Middle rock with room around it, and it takes food. Trachyphyllia is beginner to keep at a typical PAR of 50–100 in low to moderate flow.
